I’ve learned many lessons over the years when it comes to comfortable travel.

I was the queen of always overpacking AND over purchasing on trips.  I’d bring impractical bags and always managed to wear the wrong thing on flights.  I’ve dragged broken duffel bags across airports and worst of all, been absolutely freezing cold for an entire transatlantic flight!

Not only are airlines often charging extra for checked bags, there’s an ease and simplicity to travelling light.  Getting ready while abroad becomes so much easier when you’re only armed with your favourite pieces.  It’s great having to maneuver just one bag when you’re doing a lot of moving around on your trip, and especially within in Europe!  There’s often no option of an elevator and an abundance of stairs.

Curious about my must-haves for comfy, but light travel?  Be sure to read on below!

A ROLLING CARRY ON

Investing in a really great quality 4 wheel rolling suitcase is a must!  Your luggage should be as easy to transport as possible, and the 4 wheel design is perfect to stack a bag and/or jacket on top of.  My second piece of carry-on luggage is always a medium zip-close tote bag (if I’m bringing my laptop), or a small-medium cross body bag.

I opt for carry-on only for a trip a week or less (for the most part, anyway) and bonus if it has a fun pattern or colours like this pink/purple ombre American Tourister beauty.  In order to efficiently pack everything, I always roll my clothing and opt for mix and match basics.  Wearing some of your bulkiest items while in transit really helps keep space open in your bags and helps on those chilly flights.

A CHIC + CASUAL LAYERED OUTFIT

I always want to look put together on flights.  Even on a red-eye, I can never bring myself to wear sweats or pjs.  Maybe my flying anxiety has something to do with it, but I just like to get ready like any other day, despite the fact that it’s just to sit in one seat for an extended period of time.  I like to do my hair, so that I can just give it a good brush upon arrival and not have to worry about it otherwise (I have a lot of it, so styling otherwise takes a lot of time and effort).   My plane ensemble is actually quite a precise combo now, which consists of the following.

Bottoms are either extremely stretchy/comfortable denim or leggings.  Both pair well with an oversized slouchy tee.  I then layer a sweater and/or jacket or coat, depending on the season.  If you’re bringing heavier outerwear, it’s best to wear it on the flight.  For winter travel, you can sometimes store your coat in the overhead bins, which helps.  My shoes are either my most bulky pair or a comfortable sneaker, depending on how much running around is required in between flights.  The beauty of carry-on only travel, is that you have immediate access to all of your belongings, so you could easily switch to sandals in a sunny destination!  I also usually wear a hat on travel days, especially ones that I’m bringing that could easily be squished in my suitcase.  And the key ingredient is a blanket scarf.  This cozy piece provides a great layering option and can double as a blanket during your flight if needed.
