It was a clear day in Notting Hill, England and my first time exploring Portobello Market. It was actually my first time ever ‘crossing the pond’. London was a whole new world, a cultural shock to my somewhat limited travel experience. Flea markets in Vancouver cannot even be compared to what lined those narrow city streets. It was a vintage shoppers dream and an antique hunter’s heaven. I wanted to spend days exploring the vendor stands for small treasures and unique finds. But, as afternoon crept into evening, my mom and brother were ready to head back to the hotel for dinner. Just as we turned to leave I saw a stand with the most beautiful display I’ve ever seen. A slew of fur coats in all sorts of colours and prints. I wanted to investigate, I wanted to try them on, and I wanted to purchase one and bring it back home. The fur craze hadn’t hit yet, and I would have been one of the first, an innovator of sorts. But in my moment of weakness, my mother did what mothers do best and talked sense into me. She banned me from packing a fur coat in my already overflowing suitcase and purchasing a winter coat in the first days of summer. So I left the inexpensive original fur coats and headed back to the hotel only to feel the opposite of buyer’s remorse. I felt regret for not purchasing a fur coat, a feeling that I still hold onto to this day.

Since the Portobello Market incident of 2009, I have been too stubborn to purchase a fur coat of any kind here. The ones at vintage stores seem picked over and quite pricey for the quality of product. I found a decent fur vest at Front & Co. last week, but it was big on me and made me look like a bear (I say this with no exaggeration, I really looked like a big scary bear). This was until the other day, when a sample caught my eye at work. The leopard print practically purred at me to try it on. The fabric is the softest faux fur I’ve ever felt and it fit me like a glove (err…coat). The price was cheap right, and I can now say that I am a proud owner of a faux fur coat! And really, I’m so excited to move past my stubborness and have a fur coat to wear while the weather is still cold-ish.

I’m now searching for fun ways to style it. I stumbled upon a lot of all black outfits with red lips, but I am obviously wondering…how do YOU style your fur coat or vest?

Thank you so much for the comment.

I have to say I haven't been a big fur fan, however that coat (the whole outfit for that fact) seem to be changing my mind on that. Adoring those glasses!

Seems I'll have to keep my eyes open for another staple to my dream closet. <3

I love this look on you! And those glasses are so cute.
I've had a faux fur coat from Forever 21 for months and every time I put it on I just don't feel it. But I'm in love with this simple yet chic ensemble of yours. I think I may have to borrow on your inspiration.

I love that fur coat on you! I'm glad you finally found one that you liked. I bought a black faux fur coat a few months back but I haven't really figured out how to style it well, I wore it with harem pants once and that's about it! haha

First of all you look great in those glasses! And your faux fur coat is beautiful! I'm so glad you adopted it after hearing your London story. I have a faux one I got from H & M for $50.00 and I actually wore a long maxi dress with it last week, it looked good if I do say so myself ; )

Too funny I have a jacket almost exactly the same I plan on wearing this week. Not sure with what yet, but I will let you know! Possibly red pants, I know crazy!
You look adorable in it! Have a lovely week missy!

Awwww.. I hate deciding not to get something on vacation and then losing the chance 🙁 I totally feel your pain and understand if you STILL regret it after getting your recent one (which is gorgeous on you by the way!)

For inspiration on how to wear fur, you should def look up how Olivia Palermo does it! She wears a lot of fur vests and she always looks amazing.

    Happy Monday Alicia!

Love the jacket! It looks great with jeans. I bought one of the white fluffy faux fur coats from JOe fresh, that was on their Fall 2010 runway.. and I love it, but almost never find a good way to style it. So far I have only worn it with black skinny trousers and heels.

LOVE LOVE your coat, it's adorable! And didn't you hear, leopard fur goes with EVERYTHING! I mean it – jeans, maxi skirts, even that LBD. I'm such a sucker for throwing on my leopard coat over the most boring outfits, they just get a bit more glamorous once animal fur is involved, yes?

    Happy Monday! 🙂

first of all i'm happy u choose a faux vur version. nothing is more cruel than kiling animals for our superficial fashion needs. so i congratulate u for that.
second i have to tell u that these photos are stunning. especially in the last one u are simply goregous. i think u should wear your hair up like that more often.
we still need to do our little photoshoot date. now that the weather is nicer we should have more opportunities.

This story made me smile and cringe at the same time- I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who lets their mom talk them out of exciting purchases and then regrets it for years after the fact 🙂 [My mom and I had a very similar experience with some pink suede boots in London. It was eight years ago and I'm still not over it!] It's so lovely to run across other Vancouver bloggers, especially when I find we clearly have a few things in common 😉 I'm organising a blogger get-together of sorts at the end of April with some other local ladies and wonder if you'd like to join us? cute shoes! sorry about the coat awww! =( I have an awesome coat that was in my grandma's closet that ended up in my moms which then ended up in mine because my brother and sister convinced my mom that she looked like she was trying to be a pimp. After I got the coat I stuck my tongue out and said page 18 (or whatever page it was) harpers bazaar runway report baby! Yea UH! lol fur is timeless. I've always loved fur coats even when i was a kid. I'm still a kid lol

You look incredibly beautiful. Those glasses are pretty much perfect. I have a thing for glasses. I love how the leopard prints adds the fun factor to an otherwise simple look. All in all, it's fabulous.
