4 Ways To Look More Pulled Together

January 24, 2017

Sometimes, I’m really on top of my outfit planning.  When the mood strikes, I’ll retreat to the bedroom, style up assorted pieces from my closet, dance around to some fun tunes, and snap photos of the looks for future reference.  Those are usually the ensembles that I’m extra excited to wear, often with specific occasions in mind.  On an ongoing basis though, this is not the norm.  There are countless mornings that consist of just staring at my closet, half asleep, thinking what the heck am I going to wear today?

Depends on my mood, of course, but this is also usually when I don’t want to put much thought into things.  I just want to throw on something comfortable that still makes me feel relatively put together.    This happened just the other day and this outfit is what I threw on.  It’s nothing ground breaking, but I realized that there are a few key tricks to appearing slightly more polished – even if you’re really not!

All Black Everything

There is just something about wearing all black that feels so darn edgy.  I love to mix together different fabric textures when I wear an all black ensemble, so these faux leather leggings and silk blouse do just the trick.

An Oversized Coat

It’s all very Olsen twin running errands circa 2008, but a big cocoon coat just feels right.  This particular one is an old one from Aritzia, but there’s a very similar style here.

Accessorize With Purpose

It’s truly amazing how much a few accessories can transform a look.  I opted for an oversized scarf, an inexpensive pair of earrings, and a casual suede tote.  Sunglasses always help too, but we can’t all count on a bright day!  Anyway, there’s something about taking a minute to thoughtfully add a couple of accessories to a look that automatically say that you took a ton of time and careful planning to get ready.  It’s the magic ingredient, I’m telling you!

Styled Hair and/or Bold Lips

The first choice is always styled hair, but for someone with thick hair that takes eons to do anything with, that simply isn’t reality.  I’ve been trying out other options for second and third (and fourth and fifth) day hair, or that post workout mane, like a simple, low bun.  It’s low maintenance and classic, been my go-to lately.  And the last piece of the puzzle, is a bright lipstick colour.  Even if you have no other makeup on, that pop of lip colour will trick everyone into thinking that you put a ton of effort into your look!
