Life

we’ve been living life inside a bubble

June 21, 2010
It feels like life has moved so quickly in the last few years. Friends are buying houses, getting married, and now having babies. We’re growing up so quickly!!!!

Adam’s friend Tracy is pregnant with twins and her baby shower was on Saturday at Hume Park in New West. I arrived to this table of cupcakes that Laura’s youngest sister made. Umm…amazing? She needs to do this for a living!

It was wonderful to see Tracy so pregnant and to see all of Adam’s friends. I can’t wait until she pops out those two little cuties so that we can all meet them 🙂

my ideal night out with the girls

June 18, 2010
I LOVE a night out with my ladies. Getting dressed up, drinks, good food, and CHATTING! So much girl talk happening, it’s like our 4 hour phone convos come to life! I have to say though, that I feel as though I’ve grown out of the Granville Street club scene. I much prefer live concerts to top 40 djs, and a low key bar than a pretentious club.

Last night we went to The Opus in Yaletown for the Nicole Bridger SS10 fashion show and then over to the Yaletown Cactus Club for eats. I met other Vancouver bloggers and tweeters, I got to catch up with my best friends, and I spent $20 total. Now THAT is my ideal girl’s night out 🙂

It was so lovely meeting Lisa of SoloLisa. She is so genuinely nice and you can tell she is incredibly smart and of course, fashionable! It’s always great seeing Carolina of Closet Full of Nothing (we have been friends since high school) and meeting her fab friends!

We were discussing how much Brandi looks like an adorable little doll. We’re going to send her picture to a Japanese magazine (no serious, Carolina knows some people)

I love the lounge at The Opus hotel in Yaletown. I stayed there one weekend with Adam and it was so amazing, I would love to one day stay at their Montreal location. Okay the truth is I just want to go to Montreal. Brandi, could you put me in contact with Moneybags? Just kidding 😛

I was nervous to do a photo shoot with my new Nikon D3000, since I only just purchased the camera and haven’t mastered the settings, angles, colours, etc. But with Paula and Arlen’s engagement photo shoot there wasn’t much pressure because they are already getting engagement photos from their wedding photographer. Their professional photographer is very traditional though, and they wanted some other photos with more of an urban feel.

The weather on Granville Island – Sunday June 13th 2010 was PERFECT for a photo shoot! The skies were grey, but bright with no rain for the entire morning we were out shooting. The sun came out two hours into our photo session, which made for the perfect time to do a little outfit change.

Honestly, it makes me sooo happy to take beautiful pictures of people and especially when it helps out my friends. I had so much fun, I am seriously jealous of people who take photos for a living.

Here are some of my favourites out of the 800 photos we took hahaha.
Enjoy!

A story of vandalism and a case of the sads

June 14, 2010
I started writing about how exhausting my Saturday was, but it became an extremely long-winded story, so I’ll spare you. On Saturday night though, I’d gone to Adam’s friend’s house to watch the UFC fights (well, everyone else watched it, I just kind of wandered around) I’d parked on the street outside of a church on 8th Avenue in New West. Laura’s car was in front of mine and Brett’s was behind mine.

Right when the title fight ended, Adam asked if he could go get something from my car, so I got him the keys and he went out there. He came back in and told me “You’re going to want to call the police.”

My poor sweet Jetta had been damaged so bad, that I was at a loss for words. Adam showed me how the person had likely jumped from the roof of Laura’s car onto the hood of mine, causing enough impact to severely dent and crack the hood. This was concluded because of footprints on our cars, as well as a huge dent on the roof of Laura’s, which was likely done to gain leverage to jump onto mine.

The worst part of it, is that we saw a guy and a girl down the street holding a piece of paper talking to people in a car. The entire moment seemed to be in slow motion, with teenagers running around and when we tried to get close enough to get a license plate number, the car sped off.

The guy and the girl had gone to a house party two houses down so we went over to kindly ask if they’d seen anything. Baaad decision. Have you ever tried to talk to defensive punk ass 16 year old boys? It was just brutal. They were so rude even though we just asked nicely if they’d seen anything. I could tell ALL of them were lying, one was pretending to be on his cell, the girl froze up, and the lippy Asian kid just kept sarcastically telling us they didn’t know anything so we should leave. Then as we walked away the Asian kid mumbled “thanks anyways” under his breath and Shannon just couldn’t handle it. She turned back around and said “You don’t have to be a fucking dick about it. We came over here to ask if you saw anything because there is hundreds of dollars worth of damage to our cars!” Ughhhh so bloody infuriating.

The woman on the non-emergency line was super nice and said she’d had a call for almost the exact same incident somewhere else in New West. When the cop came he said all he could do is give me a police report number. Then I asked him if he’d go talk to the kids because it would make me feel a lot better.

You’ll love this part. So he came back and said that the kids were doing the annual grade 12 scavenger hunt that New West Secondary students complete every year and that what had happened to me was likely a task they “had to complete”. That would explain why there was another report of almost the same incident happening to someone else and why the girl had been holding a piece of paper. Thanks so much NWSS students, for completely ruining my night and costing me a $300 deductible when I didnt’ even DO anything :

I am bitter, yes. Especially since there is probably a YouTube video out there of those assholes jumping on my car to prove they did it for their Grad Scavenger Hunt.
And so, my Saturday night continues my life’s series of ironic events.

more interior design inspiration!

June 8, 2010
So, I’ve been in the new apartment for just over a month now and I must say that my bedroom is really coming together. I have yet to hang all my wall artwork, but this whole decorating thing has been a semi slow process.

The idea for the new room was “my vintage heart”, incorporating vintage pieces with modern pretty pieces that I love. I have focused on adding small touches, thanks to inspiration from other design blogs!

I had to fetch my old vintage vanity from my parent’s house because I knew it would perfectly fit the theme in my new place. I had originally wanted to paint it and re-cover the cushion, but my roommates talked me out of it, saying they liked the authentic feel of the dark wood and vintage fabric. I seriously don’t know how I lived without my vanity for a year at the other place! There are other great vanities at this Vanity site including some in white, the colour I wanted to paint my vanity (perhaps I will be doing a giveaway with them soon…hint hint)

still under construction

This gorgeous chandelier lamp was given to me for free from Andrea the other day.
Me: “Wow Andrea I love this lamp it’s so pretty!”

Andrea: “Do you want it?”
Me: “Excuuuuse me?”
I offered to pay for it because I desperately needed a floor lamp and the Ikea one I bought for $16 just wasn’t visually appealing. She insisted that I take it, so I definitely owe her one! I could pay you back in free babysitting ADZ 😛

It’s amazing what a difference a vase of fresh slowers makes in a room. It has been pretty easy to maintain too, Safeway usually has a variety of cheap smaller bouquets at this time of the year.

tall drawers

The idea of scarves in a bucket is from Sarah Richardson’s Cottage. I have one bucket of scarves, one of belts, and one with all my hair products (blow dryer etc.) The magnet butterflies that you see throughout my room were a purchase from a small home decor boutique.

bucket of scarves

I originally thought I’d get rid of my desk but I ended up just using it as more of a place to decorate rather than a traditional desk. I’m left with the dilemma of finding the perfect vintage chair. It’s quite awkward trying to type on the computer while standing.

full view of my desk

My desk essentials: a digital picture frame, my favourite fashion books, colour coordinated Ikea magazine holders/boxes, a Q from Urban Outfitters (for my name), small figurines that Adam has given me over the years…

pink and black and white

…easily accessible pens and scissors, a Hello Kitty calendar (on the wrong month…oops!), an old school photo of my family, a photo of my grandparents, my fave books, a vintage key, a fake flower (it was for a school project don’t judge), a pic of Austin, and some candles.

mild organization skills
Next time I’ll take photos of my closet & the pictures I put up on the walls.
Now the only challenge will be keeping it clean…

Another concert post from me…say whaaat? I know, I know, it’s a contributing factor to my shopping addiction. I wouldn’t want to calculate the amount of money I’ve spent on concerts over my lifetime, it’s more than I’d like to admit…

rain rain go away Okay but first of all, we need to talk about this depressing weather!!What the eff?

I normally love Vancouver rain, but it is JUNE weather Gods, not Novemeber…just in case you were confused for a moment.Vancouver SpecialMy outfit is thanks to the amazing Aritzia tank I snagged the other day. I’ve been hunting for months to find the perfect summer tank that I can tuck into all the high waisted items in my closet. I love the tank so much I went to get it in the mint green as well. When you love a basic piece like that, you have to act on it!
all smiles at The CommodoreWe didn’t make it to the show until the opening band was on their last song. It sounded really good though, I’ll have to research and look into them some time!
my outfit at The Temper TrapThe changes in lighting at The Commodore have been ahhhmazing lately! Two thumbs up from this little shutterbug! The Temper TrapIf you don’t know The Temper Trap, then you should (start out with their first single Sweet Disposition and then take it from there!) They ended their show with Drum Song and Adam and I went crazy dancing and rocking out, it was a blaaaast! They were just fantastic live, I defs recommend 🙂

The Temper TrapAnother video from the concert. I’m telling you though, I am the worst videographer of all time! Seriously, I try to zoom in and it’s just blurry and the sound isn’t the best quality. But if you try realllly hard to listen for it, you will hear his amazing voice above all the background noise. Enjoy!

I know I sounded pretty emo there for a moment, but seriously thank you all for such kind words and well wishes. I thankfully feel much better now and am currently relaxing in bed (my Saturday night…you jealous?)

I am especially pleased to report to you that I have been promoted at work! I started out three years ago as a ‘junior stylist’, a title that I hated because everyone thought I was a hair dresser. Not that there is anything wrong with being a hair stylist, it was just annoying to explain to everyone what I did for work. I am now a part of the marketing team and I think I’ve decided on the title ‘Online Marketing Specialist’. Fancy, right?
007newThe promotion has forced me into full time hours and puts the brakes on my plans to speed through my last ten courses in school. As of right now I am working 36 hours a week at the office, teaching dance 9 hours a week and taking a 3 hour night class. Perhaps that explains my meltdown(s)? I need to delete something for fall…school seems like the best option. Maybe a distance course? That way I can do the work when it is most convenient for me. Sorry…thinking out loud.015newI took my brother shopping today and we spent a bunch of his money. If there’s anything I like more than spending my own money, it’s helping someone else spend theirs. He ended up with plaid chino shorts and grey chino pants from Club Monaco, some basic tees from Old Navy, and a vintage inspired Adidas tee from Plenty. We are going out again soon to hit the boutiques in Gastown and Main Street. He has never been shopping in Vancouver before…can you believe it?

018newLast night was great fun at Venue on Granville Street. I hadn’t been there since it was the old Plaza, where I’d had such a bad experience I swore I’d never be back. But clearly it’s trying to change itself into a cool place for bands to play. Last night was Local Natives who I sooooo l-o-v-e! If you weren’t there I am telling you right now that you missed out, but hope is not lost. They claim that they’ll be back in the fall woot woot!024newThey were awesome live, they sound just as good if not better than their Gorilla Manor album!026new
