a monday morning message

April 18, 2010
I received an invite to a BC Transplant fundraising event in my email last week. It was supposed to be an event that Eva Markvoort would speak at (like she did last year) but since her passing in March, the event was being held in her honor.

Before Eva passed away I had never given very much thought to organ donation. I wasn’t against it, and if you asked me if I would want to give up my organs after I die I would gladly answer yes. So why on earth had I never signed up?

To be honest, I just don’t think I’d ever thought of it, which is a huge wake up call about transplant awareness. I purchased my ticket to the fundraiser and immediately went to the Transplant BC website to sign up to become an organ donor.

At the event on Saturday I was able to meet Eva’s sweet mother who gave a lovely speech about how transplant changed Eva’s life. There was also an adorable woman who spoke from the other perspective about her son who died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage and she ended up getting a letter saying her son’s organs had saved 5 lives. She read aloud the letters she received from the organ recipients and their families (which brought everyone to tears). The fact that her son saved these people brought happiness to the tragic events and helped bring her closure.

I can’t remember the exact numbers, but something like 59% of Canadians have said that they are for organ donation, but only 17% are registered organ donors. It is so frustrating to know that the information and expertise is there, but the resources are not. I now know 2 people who have died waiting for an organ transplant, and that is just unacceptable to me!

I was so inspired that I have challenged myself to get 10 people to sign up as organ donors. I’m not asking you to give money or volunteer your time. All I ask is that you take 2 minutes to go online and sign up to become an organ donor (you only need basic info and a Care Card #).

So far I’ve only gotten one person to sign up, but I’m working on 4 others who will hopefully sign up in the next few days. How could you say no to potentially saving lives?
TransplantBC…go and sign up now! (and if you do please let me know and spread the word!!!)

Last July I wrote a little post about a Miss. Florence Welch that I had discovered and couldn’t stop listening to. Her cd ‘Lungs’ was by far the best cd I heard in 2009, and I recommended her to everyone I knew. I even promoted Florence to strangers (it’s true, one drunk night I got some girl to download 2 songs on her iPhone because she’d never heard of her).
I was a little bit nervous before the show because when I love a cd THAT much, if her performance was mediocre maybe I would never see the cd in the same light.

Florence made us wait anxiously while they set up her stage, which included floral arrangements and a beautiful harp. She finally came out wearing a sexy all black outfit with beaded embellishments and a Cleopatra style headdress.

Honestly, Florence put on the best show of my entire life (and I’ve probably been to 50+ concerts). She has an even better voice than her cd lets on, if that’s even humanly possible. At 23 years old, she looks like she has more performing experience than many of the other artists I’ve seen live. She played most of her Lungs album, and with just the right amount of change to make them exciting all over again. Florence spoke about how she got her hair done in Vancouver and ate some sushi (which I have on a video that I’m too tired to upload right now) and had a lot of crowd involvement. At one point she had all of the Commodore Ballroom jumping up and down dancing around just like her. Then 10 minutes later, when I thought it was impossible she could be any cooler, she went crowd surfing.

I fully admit that I was that annoying girl that sang every single lyric to every single song. My arms were covered in goosebumps the entire performance and I still feel like I can barely describe the experience to you. I had the time of my life!!!

Here is a little taste of the amazingness that is Florence + The Machine, with a video of the end of her song ‘Drumming’. This was one of my favorite moments of the concert because I obviously LOVE this song, but she rocks out at the very end and kills it.

If you ever pass up the opportunity to see Florence perform live, I might have to punch you in the face. And if you don’t know her music yet, then go to YouTube RIGHT now and preview some of her songs. SHE IS THAT GOOD xx

2 years ago today I started this little project and wow, I cannot believe how much it has changed in such a short amount of time! I have made so many new friends and seriously can’t remember what life was like before my blog.

Thank you so much for reading, it means so much to me 🙂

Danielle and I met up yesterday for quite a nice little Saturday. We started the afternoon with Ikea lunch followed by Ikea shopping. We both got some little odds and ends as well as some good ideas. We then zipped over to New Westminster to check out the antique shops on Front Street.

I wanted so many things for my new room like an old typewriter, an old phone, and an old radio. Problem is that I think I’m supposed to be cutting down the amount of stuff I have rather than picking up more. So I was very strong and only got a big old key and this old suitcase. Not only is the old suitcase just cool, but I think I’ll use it as storage for my extra sets of bedsheets!

Adventures in Portland

April 11, 2010
I seriously love road trips, especially relatively shorter ones like the 6 hour drive to Portland. We left a little bit later than planned and we waited an hour and a half at the border, so it was a really good thing I had bought us mocha’s! Since we’d left later than we wanted to, we didn’t get into Portland until about 2 am. By that time, we were both so tired we weren’t even speaking any more. I really don’t know how Adam drove that last hour…what a trooper! Anyways, the lady at the front desk is explaining the continental breakfast etc., and what I THOUGHT she said was that tea and cookies and burritos were from 3-6. Of course I had to make a fool of myself and tell Adam how excited I was for burritos the next day. And he’s like BURRITOS!??!! Who said anything about burritos? I still don’t know what she actually said, but how did I not question the oddness of such a combo? Hahaha

Road trip essentials are coffees and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches 🙂
Our first morning we decided to skip the free breakfast and splurge on brunch at Kenny & Zuke’s Delicatessen. The same sort of feel as The Drive here, the food was okay…kind of overpriced.
This was our adorable Mark Spencer hotel. Super cheap rates and I like boutique hotels so much better than big chains! We got it for $89 a night, free parking, free continental breakfast, and $50 cash back when we booked through travelportland.com‘s ‘Portland Perks’ package!
Wandering around the city…
I’m approximately 12 years old here…
Huuuuuuuuge umbrella!

Are you a statue or a real person?

“It’s a real person.”
“Omg really? “
“No, it was a statue.”

Love this one

After wandering around for hours, we stopped at The Mezz which is attached to Whole Foods to get groceries and then coffees. We ended up sitting there talking about pretty much everything from work troubles to real estate and accidentally stayed there for 3 hours! It was so perfect though, sitting in a coffee shop and talking is one of my favorite things to do.

We felt a little lost about where to go for dinner, so we ended up just ducking into the first place that looked decent. It was called Pastini Pastaria and was sort of like if Boston Pizza was local.

The next day was shopping day, so we got up early to hit the stores! I was determined to find Anthropologie and Free People, just because I stalk their websites so often.

Couldn’t resist the temptation in Anthro…got a skirt (on sale mmkay?)

We wandered through the other end of The Pearl district, which was very much like Yaletown.

We had lunch at Paragon and it was sooo delicious! I am still daydreaming about this grilled cheese sammich!

The wind and rain on Saturday was out of control. My boots were leaking and my umbrella was flipping. Tights probably weren’t the best decision either…

On our own Easter hunt….for Free People!

This brought us to the Cultural District which I was in obviously in love with because 23rd is lined with clothing boutiques, vintage shops, cafes, etc. Unfortunately the street is currently under construction so it wasn’t looking its best for photos. I was mega disappointed in Free People that store was pathetic. I found way more in the local boutiques that I liked, including a dress that I almost bought here for double the price. Thank goodness I’d talked myself outta that one!

Afternoon pick up

American Apparel looks so out of place.

As I tweeted, my purchases were influenced by the hipster in me. Skirt from Anthropologie, and the nerd glasses, Q, and She & Him record and frame were from Urban Outfitters. I was so pissed when I saw the record at a local record store 15 minutes later for $6 cheaper. Ripped off by UO…I should have known!

Adam’s purchases were a locally designed t shirt from a local store, Flogging Molly record from Everyday Music. Hat and record frame from UO.

That night I tried Indian food for the first time ever, which is REALLY pathetic as a vegetarian! We ate at India Chaat House on SW Morrison Street and mmm it was so good. I can’t wait to have Indian food again here, I can’t believe I waited so long! After our dinner feast, we rented An Education for a modest $12. At least it was a really good movie.

Sunday was our day to wander towards the water and we ended up discovering the Saturday Market…on Sunday.

A suicide hot line just before the bridge…one last attempt!

Rebels without a cause…ran across 5 lanes of traffic to get a better view.

Love

Would you not think that Couch Street was pronounced like COUCH the piece of furniture? I don’t know if the front desk lady was fucking with us, but she pronounced it COOCH street…

After Powell’s Books (Adam’s version of heaven) and some down time, we settled on a casual Easter dinner at Deschutes Brewery and Social House. Pizzas were YUM!

I was sad to leave the next morning, but the drive home was a fun one! We stopped at Target and this was Adam’s Rudolph nose…

Sunny Seattle

This really happened somehwere in Washington.

After we passed through the 30 minute storm it was smooth sailing and only a 5 minute wait at the border. We didn’t even have to lie about our purchases (not that I ever would…) because we didn’t spend very much! I so loved the tax free shopping.
I could definitely live in Portland, it was super friendly and very much my style. If you’re looking for a little weekend getaway from the same old Vancouver life, then I definitely recommend Portland. If you don’t drive there’s even the scenic train ride that only costs a bit more than gas money would 🙂

my vintage heart

April 9, 2010
I have spent the last year or so living in a place that I did not feel was my own. It was white walls, cold floors, and only temporary. I didn’t even have any recent photos up…and I LOVE photography! Living in a place that does not feel like home is both frustrating and depressing. I am a creative person and I want my room to be a reflection of my personality.

After much deliberation, I have decided that I want the new place to be decorated in a warm, vintage theme. I have a few vintage items from my nana and some from antique shopping over the years. I hope so much that my new room feels bright and cozy, a place that I can look forward to spending my time.

photos from we heart it

I have been getting inspiration from stores, blogs, photos, etc. It’s actually amazing how easy it is to get inspired to re decorate a room.
I can’t wait for a fresh start for my vintage heart♥

tea, cookies, and burritos

April 6, 2010
Hello all! I’m back from beautiful Portland, Oregon with a ton of stories and pictures that cannot be shared until I finish my homework…I need to be a good little girl!

Wednesday night if I’m still awake, I plan to go to the Vancouver Fashion Week opening party…anyone else? I’ve never been to Celebrities and I haven’t been to a fashion event in sooo long! Thinking I’ll probably wear my new skirt from Anthropolgie. If you’re curious to see it, I posted a picture on my Twitter.

Well my lovelies, hope you all had a great Easter I’ll update you very soon!

a warning sign of things to come

March 21, 2010
Obligatory fashion post.
I blog today because I am bored. So bored, that I am sitting on the couch at my parent’s house, trying not to pay attention to the tv because my mom is watching Legally Blonde. Yes, it’s true.

I had to come here to do laundry and apparently spend 4 hours doing nothing instead of homework. At least it’s only 7pm and there’s still hope that I’ll do some studying at some point. Clean clothes…I can’t wait!

Shayna of Life:Forward gave me a “One Lovely Blog Award”, which is so sweet. She recently launched a new look to her site, which looks really great! Definitely go check it out!

I would this time like to pass on the award and mention some lovely blogs you should all be reading…

1. UGottaHearThis is a blog you absolutely must subscribe to if you like indie music. He features one cd per post and writes a bit about the artist, some info on the album, and links to youtube videos so you can preview their music. If you’re anything like me and find pitchfork intimidating and slightly pretentious, then UGottaHearThis is for you!

2. If you like fashion, I must warn you that Tieka’s blog Selective Potential is beyond addicting. It’s a combination of her fascinating Michigan life, her love for her husband Brett, and her amazing fashion sense. She’s totally relatable and her photographs are inspirational!
3. My co-worker Danielle started a project called 365 Outfits A Year in which she is photographing her outfit every day this year. The entire concept is really neat and it’s pretty fun for me because I photograph her a lot of the days at the design office. Feel free to go check it out and say hello.
4. If you enjoy reading stories of a 20 something girl who just happens to be one of my best friends, then you should subscribe to Kisekae Diary of a Doll. Her stories of dating, nursing, and random adventures are always entertaining and will definitely make you smile!
5. It seems that journalism students have the most captivating way of telling stories. Peach of The Peach Pit is so talented at writing, she always makes me laugh. I recommend her painfully truthful story ‘It’s Not Like Grey’s Anatomy At All’, it’s worth a minute to read! Ugh, my stomach hurts, I think I ate too much stir fry. I’m sure it was smothered in butter too…Papa Quan insists on smothering everything in butter. “It’s good for you,” he says. One time I told him I wanted to start a healthy diet so he came home with an entire apple pie for me. I protested in confusion that I had JUST told him I wanted to eat healthier. He responded by explaining “It’s sugar free Alicia, and it has apples in it.”
Last night my brother, Adam, and I went to go see Norm Macdonald at Red Robinson Theatre. Red Robinson himself came out on stage to introduce him which was both weird and surprising. He tried to tell some lame lawyer jokes…it didn’t quite work out. Norm was a riot though and made me want to go to another comedy show asap! Perhaps in Oregon…are people in Oregon funny?
