Things are looking a little festive around the apartment with the arrival of a few mini pumpkins!  I still can’t believe it’s October, can you?  I’ve been reflecting a lot about what I want to accomplish this month.  September flew by so fast, feels like I didn’t even get a chance to gather my thoughts/personal goals for the fall.
Finding A Balance
My cousin Melissa has accurately categorized us as “people pleasers”.  We’ll go out of our way to please everyone else, even if it means pushing our own priorities aside (especially when these priorities include exercising, chores, or other tasks I don’t necessarily feel like doing).  I’m not sure if this stems from high school or what, but trying to make everyone else happy is exhausting.  I need to start prioritizing and sometimes put myself first.  Which, let me tell you, will be quite a struggle.
Whipping Back Into Shape
Seems like everything in my life deems me “too busy” to get myself to an exercise class (see above).  Time to get serious about a kick ass workout regime.  It’s going to involve a lot of Barre Fitness classes, my new favourite workout.  See you at the Barre!

Embracing The Weird

Okay, this is going to sound really silly.  But, ever since discovering the amazingness that is New Girl, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I hide my weird.  When you really get to know me, I’m a super goofy, quirky person, much like fictional character Jessica Day.  I need to stay true to myself and start showcasing my weirdness (in moderation) to everyone!  Prepare yourself for strange accents and voices that I like to lace into regular conversation 😉
Learning New Things
Since I’m not in school, I have the luxury of finding non-traditional ways to keep learning.  First of all, I’ve been wanting to brush up on my francais for quite a while and it’s about time I get started!  Bought one of those awesome learning french dvds from Chapters, so I’ll let you know how that goes.  Also been bookmarking some healthy recipes that I’d like to try.  The first attempt will be for a Thanksgiving dinner with friends this weekend.  I’ll also be reading a few books this month, including The Great Gatsby and a work related book about social media.

Fall 2012 is going to be awesome!  What are some of your goals this season?

Remember the time we went to New York City and I lazily put off finishing up the rest of the vacation posts?  These memories shall not go to waste, and so we must continue.
Had to show Adam the beauty that is Central Park on our 4th day.  We had a delightful picnic in the park and spent the afternoon exploring.  That evening we had a magical New York moment when we felt a few raindrops and ran 2 blocks for cover, able to take shelter at a tourist gift shop.  I forgot how spectacular East Coast storms are.  The city goes from calm to complete storm chaos in just seconds.
{Day 4 NYC Recommendations}
WHERE TO WALK: Take 5th Ave up to Central Park and then walk through the park.  We took Madison Ave. back down and happened to stumble upon Laduree!
WHERE TO EAT + DRINK: Our picnic in Central Park was complete thanks to our accidental discovery of The Plaza Food Hall.  We got delicious, fresh sandwiches, and iced coffees.  As mentioned macarons from Laduree are a must.  Dinner was vegetarian Korean fare at Hangawi.
WHERE TO SHOP: It’s always fun to drag your unassuming boyfriend into Tiffany’s to make him really uncomfortable
LESSONS LEARNED: Don’t talk to anyone in Times Square.  They prey on tourists and we were naive enough to purchase tickets to a comedy show, even though we knew better.  Next time, I’ll stick to your recommendations and avoid lying sales people!

A brand new neighbourhood to discover, was the East Village/Lower East Side.  Looking back, I wish Adam and I had spent more time there and would even consider staying in the East Village next time around.  It was just full of life and personality, very much like our hood here in Vancouver.  What’s with the East side of cities, right?
{Day 5 NYC Recommendations}

WHERE TO WALK: We could have spent days walking the East Village.  So much to explore, so little time.
WHERE TO EAT + DRINK: Coffee and/or ice cream from Van Leeuwen. On the way back to our hotel, we stopped for drinks and appies at Café Habana.  Their corn on the cob is a must.  Also had a fancy pants meal at Spice Market in MePa.
WHERE TO SHOP: Stumbled on Tokio7 Consignment Shop and had to refrain from purchasing Chanel, Dior, et. all at bargain prices.  A real gem.

Tried fitting in a ton on the last day and a half, leaving us with the post NYC exhaustion.  Took the subway to Battery Park, where we made our 10 second acting debut in a Bond No.9 Video.  Then we explored Ground Zero, braved Century 21, and then walked all the way over to The High Line.  I know, my feet are still upset about it.  On our last day, we went back to SoHo and took the train to Grand Central Station.  Tried to do some afternoon reading in Bryant Park and were both falling asleep!  Perhaps 7 jam packed days in the New York heat was ambitious, but we’d surely do it all again.
{Day 6/7 NYC Recommendations}

WHERE TO WALK: Battery Park for views of the Statue of Liberty.  We avoided the crowds at the 9/11 Memorial and did a self guided tour through St Paul’s Chapel of Trinity Church.  Very powerful.  On the other side of town, The High Line was worth the walk.
WHERE TO EAT + DRINK: Got our pizza fix at Numero 28 in the East Village and then a few blocks to McSorley’s Old Ale House for beers.

Phewf.  NYC recapped, if you have any specific questions please don’t hesitate to ask 🙂

As seen on the FASHION Magazine Style Panel:

I’m a recent convert to the world of oversized clothing.  Since I’m technically top heavy, I’d always assumed that it just wasn’t the look for me. But, I’ve recently learned that the beauty of oversized pieces is that they’re full of styling possibilities! Using the power of accessorizing, I try to break up this often boxy silhouette with a long necklace, scarf, or belt.  This magically centres the outfit and counters any perceived added width.  To complete this cozy autumn look, all you need is a pair of skinny denim for balanced proportions, and a large cup of hot chocolate for warmth and deliciousness!

And don’t forget to check out how the other bloggers rocked the boxy look!

it’s confession time.  it has been slighlty less motivating to get dressed in the am, since the contents of my closet are currently strewn all over the apartment.  adam has now nicknamed me “the hurriquan”, as it looks like a hurricane blew through our apartment and left it in a state of emergency.  purses in the living room, clothes on the floor, jewellery on the desk, shoes…well, shoes are just everywhere.

it’s time to tackle the mess.  any hurriquan preparedness/closet organizing tips you could share?

Just for fun, I set off with SC Imagery to make a mini video to celebrate the launch of the website.  We spent the day at Granville Island Market buying goodies and then headed back to my patio summer home office to get some work done.  My favourite moment of the film is when a fan of my blog spotted me and asked for a photo together.  Having a video camera follow me around and a fan approach me?  Pretty sure I felt like a mini celebrity for a moment in time!

Last Thursday was Vancouver’s very first Fashion’s Night Out.  Joining forces with To Vogue Or Bust, Prairie Girl In The City, and Her Waise Choice, we set off to find out what FNO was all about.
Starting out at a lovely cocktail reception at Secret Location, limos then picked everyone up to escort us to our next destination.  We decided to head to the fashion show, where to be honest, things ran a little long.  But, perhaps I was just extra impatient because I was standing in heels for an hour and a half.  We did, however, see some really great lines and got some great Fall wardrobe inspiration!
After the show, we caught a limo back up to Robson Street and started shopping!  I’ve concluded that FNO is like Halloween for fashionable adults.   Rather than costumes, we all decked out in fashionable outfits. Instead of collecting candy (although in some cases, still candy), we were given drinks at each store. And most importantly, we’d all meet in the streets and compare which store was doing what and who had the best party.
It was great running into Solo Lisa, Rick Chung, A Fashion Love Affair, Starving Stylist, Lil Fashionisto , and an absolute pleasure to finally meet Joy Pecknold.  The night was really fun (you can’t go wrong with fashionable adult Halloween) and I can’t wait for next year, when FNO Vancouver will hopefully be even bigger and better!
