it’s all in the details

Twitter worked its magic on me today and basically forced me to go check out the Obakki sale after work. There were racks and racks of clothing at really decent prices. After initially wanting to purchase half the room, I narrowed it down to this rich purple blouse. The v neckline and sheer romantic sleeves are what won me over. It is regular $275 for $50, and most importantly, made in Canada!

The Obakki Warehouse Sale is still on this weekend. More info here.

Last June my mom, brother and I crossed the pond for the first time over to England. A lot of my mom’s family is over there and we spent 2.5 lovely weeks in London and travelling the English Countryside. The only reason my dad didn’t join us on the trip, is because when we booked it he was still an avid smoker and couldn’t handle the thought of a 9 hour flight without a cigarette. I have a feeling that’s why my dad had never been to Europe at all (addiction at its finest). Well, since my parents retirement and my Dad making it a year without smoking, they booked themselves a little Euro adventure with another couple. They went to London, Rome, Nice, Monte, Carlo, etc. and brought back some amazing gifts for Tavis and I.

Call me a brat, but I may or may not have “guided” my parents toward my favourite UK boutique. And by guided, I mean maps, pictures, and detailed instructions LOL. My mom was super sweet and even tried the items on to make sure they’d fit me 🙂 Thanks again ma

I have to say, that this past weekend I had a PERFECT Sunday. What on earth could constitute an entire day of perfection you ask? Well, to begin, I slept in until 11 am and it was all kinds of glorious. Adam and I then went for breakfast at The Whip where we shared a fruit smoothie and I indulged in french toast stuffed with strawberries and cream cheese. We headed up Main Street wandering into stores along the way. Adam purchase a winter jacket and an East Van t shirt from Exhibit, which I loved because the only thing that makes me happier than shopping is watching other people shop! I obviously stopped by Barefoot Contessa to see the windows that The Anthology styled, then the final and most damaging to my bank account was Front & Co. Adam and I both bought each other “birthday presents” aka we both knew we shouldn’t be buying anything and justified purchasing them for each other as gifts. Our birthdays aren’t until November. Basically, this black hat is not yet mine. It was an extremely early present that I essentially borrowed for this photo because I really liked it with my outfit.

After shopping we got coffees at Liberty Cafe, I watched Adam’s team kick ass at his soccer game, and then myself and some of Adam’s family members ate “Thanksgiving” dinner at White Spot. We went to my parent’s house to see my brother and catch up on our PVR’d Mad Men episodes (only 2 left of the season eeep) and ended the night with Hot Tub Time Machine.

I don’t know if it really was the perfect Sunday or it just seemed that way because we had another day off on Monday. Or maybe Sunday seems so lovely because my car was broken into on Monday night. But that’s a whole other post in itself, wouldn’t you say?

my very first haul video

October 8, 2010

I was first introduced to Haul videos by the YouTube obessed Kisekae last year. She encouraged me to try one, but I was just so timid about doing it. I looove posing for a camera, but as soon as someone points a video camera in my face I freeze up and don’t know what to do with myself!I compare it to Chandler on Friends when he has to pose for pictures…
But, last night I went shopping with my co-worker and when I got home felt like giving this haul business a try. This was my first attempt, after pretending to talk to the camera for about 10 minutes to calm myself down (really, if someone had seen me they’d think I was crrrazy). My voice sounds a little bit strange, especially when I say “s”, but that’s what I get for using a digital cam to make a video.

Hope you enjoy the video, let me know what you think!

Hello from Starbucks aka the internet at home decided not to connect tonight. The ONE night this week that I planned a Skype date, a blog post, and photo uploading…all of which cannot be completed without the internets. BLAST!

Adam and I stayed out in the burbs this weekend to keep my brother company while my parents are away. I was looking through my old clothes there in search of something “new” (forgotten so more like new again) to wear. I stumbled upon a box of shoes and rediscovered my absolute FAVOURITE pair of shoes I’ve ever owned. This particular pair of shoes were found at a Yaletown boutique back in 2006 for $19 (on sale of course). They are the perfect height, just the right amount of vintage inspiration, and unbelievably comfortable. I had to retire them a few years ago because I wore them down so bad that the back of them are completely torn up. Unfortunately, I got wrapped up in happy shoe memories and decided to wear them out on Saturday night, despite their ragged appearance. And guess what? I actually got compliments on them!!! (but, keep in mind that I strategically placed myself against a wall all evening so no one would see the back of them :P) Seychelles are one of my favourite shoe brands, wearing them is like walking on a cloud and I’m so glad I was reminded of how great their footwear is. Note to self: go buy another pair of Seychelles!

Adam calls those pieces of hair my long sideburns and it creeps me out. It creeps me out even more when he holds it up and pretends it’s a moustache. Do you think he’s not so subtly trying to tell me to get rid of them? Haha…

This was the last time I wore these lovely denim leggings. I ripped them a few days later while stretching. Why I tested the limits of my denim leggings by doing the butterfly stretch, I’m not sure. I did however get to show you guys my new black leather boots from DSW in San Fran. The military buttons on the back are my favourite. And the fact that they came in wide calf. I have dancer calves, okay :P?

I have to laugh at the photo above because Adam and I look like total nerds and my bro looks good without trying…jerk! We wet to the Arcade Fire show at Pacific Coliseum on Tuesday because they’re one of my brother’s favourite bands. I was expecting a totally mellow performance and was very much surprised by their energy. Though my video taping skills aren’t the best, my two videos from the show are surprisingly good sound quality. If you have a chance to see them live, I suggest you do so. Or just live vicariously through the YouTube videos…either or.

I was so excited to meet up with Nicole of Le Mode Du Jour and Carolina of Closet Full of Nothing for a girl’s night. Nicole and I decided to meet up first before dinner to do a super quick photo shoot during “Magic Hour”. I am notoriously late for EVERYTHING and apparently so is Nicole, as we were both running behind and running to try and catch that small bit of “magic” light right after the sun sets. It’s seriously going to be a major challenge to get outfit photos in the winter!

Speaking of challenges, can someone explain to me how to dress for Vancouver weather lately? It’s not Summer, it’s not Fall, it’s “Sumall”!!! Tights? Bare legs? Jacket? Sleeveless? Sunglasses? Umbrella? No one knows what to do. It’s just a bit of a problem when you’re trying to throw together an outfit in 5 minutes! Ahh Indian Summer, how you make my blogging life even more difficult!

It has been so great to meet/get to know some other Vancouver bloggers and tweeters. I can’t wait to meet even more people this Fall! Always lovely to see you Lina & Nicole, thanks for the girl chat and photo shoot.

I know what you’re thinking, you’re like “Alicia, do you own ANY other pairs of pants?” The answer is no. Well, yes, but I just love these pants more than my other pants. It’s true, I play favourites with my clothing. These high waisted Zara pants were the best damn investment I’ve ever made! I keep stalking Zara in hopes that they repeated these pants in great Fall fabrics, but so far no luck.

This is yet another casual look, even though I have a million dressier outfits just begging to be photographed. Half the trouble of outfit posts is finding someone who wants to photograph your outfit. Really, it’s a pretty good business idea to be a freelance fashion blog photographer because I’m sure there are plenty of people who would call! Anyways, this whole look came about because I was at my parents house taking jewellery from my mom that she never wears. I scored that lovely gold Hawaiian leaf necklace, some authentic 80’s earrings, and some funky brooches. Thanks ma!

Marlee’s friend from school was hosting a graduation for her apprenticeship at Rain Hair Salon. Katie Rose took an ordinary hair show concept and turned it into an entire True Blood inspired vampire mini musical. The venue was gorgeous and they’d clearly put a lot of effort into the spooky decorative touches. The drink choices were bleeding vodka drinks with eyeballs or red wine, served by a vampire of course! The mini musical included a dramatic scene of a vampire biting a human, followed by a goose bump filled opera performance by two amazingly talented singers. Thank you again for the invite and for putting on such an amazing show, you are amazingly sweet and talented Katie Rose 🙂

I am back in Vancouver and reality today, freshly inspired with both fashion and photography. There were so many stylish people in San Francisco, it was beyond impressive. In 5 short days I barely had a chance to see all the unique neighbourhoods in SF. The only hip area I was able to visit was Haight and Ashbury where I found girly boutiques, a fantastic record store, and of course, Wasteland. I unfortunately still have 600 photos to edit before I can blog about it, so figured I’d just post my outfit from today.

I actually feel a little sad that I’m not going back to school today, it’s one of my favourite parts of the fall. This week of September always represents new beginnings and opportunities, it’s so exciting! Since I’m missing out on text books and clean sheets of lined paper, I’ll be starting a new exercise regime to get a sense of positive change. I also decided to wear a back to school inspired outfit today. Picking out an outfit for class was half the fun of school anyways!
