10 Shows To Binge Watch Right Now

February 13, 2019
what to watch on netflix right now

Wondering what to watch next? Here’s a list of shows I recommend!

Or you could just watch Friends/The Office again 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes I am just blown away by the fact that we can access so many shows on demand. It feels like yesterday (but also forever ago) that I used to have to set a VHS tape to record something I wanted to re-watch and that we’d have to wait AN ENTIRE WEEK in between episodes!!! And now look at us, we can stream things all damn day! With Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Crave, Adam and I are actually cancelling our cable package next month. We just don’t use it enough to justify the astronomical price, especially in conjunction with these streaming services. It’s going to feel so good to get rid of it, I’m sure we won’t even miss it!

Anyway, I have been freaking crushing shows lately, because what the heck else are you supposed to do during a snow storm? I thought I’d put them all in a comprehensive list in case you’re doing the mindless “What should I watch next?” scroll!

P.S. It should be noted that I’m Canadian so you might have to search for these shows on different streaming services wherever you call home.

1. The Bodyguard | Netflix

Ooooh this six-part series is so good, I bring it up with pretty much everyone.  If you like a suspenseful crime show and/or British tv, then this BBC hit is for you!  Brought to us Canadians via Netflix (many thanks), this drama hits you in the face with the plot and hooks you in with action within the first 5 minutes!  And my oh my, Richard Madden is easy on the eyes. Adam and I burned through this like crazy on our trip in November and now we love to spontaneously lock eyes with each other and say “PS David Budd” very seriously but in lousy Scottish accents.

2. Atypical | Netflix

If you like witty and topical family dramas, then this show might be for you!  This is one that Adam and I watch together and it makes us laugh out loud, occasionally tear up, and mostly warms our hearts.  It’s based around a family of 4 and how they navigate a rough patch in a marriage, the dumpster fire that is being a teenage girl in high school, and life as/with a high functioning teenage boy on the autism spectrum.

3. Sex Education | Netflix

We gave this show a try a few weeks ago and were both pleasantly surprised. It’s definitely trying to be many things to appeal to a wider audience (a UK high school where the athletes wear letterman jackets? What is this, a sunny Riverdale?) but the concept is actually really interesting. Sex Education just got the green light on a second season as well, so there’s more to look forward to!

4. Ugly Delicious | Netflix

If you like Chef’s Table and/or food docs in general, then you should watch Ugly Delicious (perhaps whilst eating, to enhance the experience). Chef David Chang, who you probably know from his Momofuku restaurants, travels near and far in search of delicious food. It sparked some thought-provoking ideas in terms of food, we learned a few fun facts, and overall, we really liked this series. This show is also getting a second season AND Mr. Chang was recently spotted here in Vancouver filming something, so maybe our local food scene will be part of it?!

5. Lovesick | Netflix

If the title doesn’t sound familiar, it might be because they initially called this one ‘Scrotal Recall’ which I’m sure turned many viewers away, myself included. Once renamed as Lovesick, I can tell you that we binged and loved this series. It’s a light British romcom/drama style show and certainly doesn’t reinvent the wheel but is very entertaining. The soundtrack is killer and Daniel Ings is hilarious it as per usual. What’s with my love for the funny friend in these comedies?!

6. The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel | Amazon Prime

Realistically, Maisel should be in the number one spot, but these aren’t in any particular order, so here we are more than halfway down the list. You guys, honestly, I feel as though Amy Sherman Palladino and I are one of the same and I want to live in her brain. I love how she creates, especially that familiar fast-talking dialogue (huge Gilmore Girls fan). I want to bottle up the energy of this smart, visually appealing, and downright funny show and never let it go.

7. Killing Eve | Crave

Starring Sandra Oh…need I say more? The premise of this girl-powered British drama is that an MI5 officer is tracking down a young and talented psychopathic assassin. They form an obsession with each other and things turn dangerous and oddly seductive. This show felt different, delightful and unpredictable, I think you’ll really like it!

8. Tidying Up With Marie Kondo | Netflix

If anything, you should watch a few episodes just to grasp the KonMari method that everyone has been talking about this year. Admittedly, I was a clutterbug/borderline emotional hoarder up until last year when I finally started facing my emotional health and naturally began facing the clutter around me as I cleared my mind. So, essentially I was like these people until quite recently. Marie Kondo has some great organization tips and I just love any of these shows about people bettering their lives because everyone deserves happiness!

9. The Looming Tower | Amazon Prime

This show was fascinating!!! It’s based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction book ‘The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11.” As it sounds, it takes place in the late ’90s around the rising threat of Osama bin Laden/Al-Qaeda. The craziest thing is a look at the rivalry between the FBI and CIA at the time and how their lack of teamwork could have set the path to September 11th. It is brilliantly cast and written, I highly recommend!

10. Friends From College | Netflix

Friends From College is a bit of a dramedy, which I say because the characters are all super flawed privileged people that do a lot of cringe-worthy things that can be hard to watch. But, then they make me laugh out loud with dark, clever humour and it’s all good. You’ll recognize a lot of the cast, but it’s honestly worth it just for Fred Savage. He’s freaking hilarious in this role!

So, I must know, what tv series do you suggest I binge watch next? I’ve heard wonderful things about Russian Doll, so I started last night but it’s too early for me to tell if it’s recommendable. Let me know in the comments below!

By the way, my sweater is this H&M Long Cardigan in Beige Melange

Right?! It ended up being such a cute and entertaining show. Hope you enjoy the shows! I just finished Russian Doll last night and would DEFINITELY recommend as well. I thought the first ep was kind of boring but it gets so much better!

Totally loving the Amazing Mrs Maisel! She is a gas, so funny. I gave up cable a while back, and completely enjoy the freedom of binge watching, however, the rare occasions I am watching at someone else’s house, the commercials now drive me crazy!

All of these shows are finished/cancelled now, but I MUST recommend that you watch Please Like Me, Love, and Friends From College. All three are on Netflix!
