The Rehearsal

November 26, 2015

pemberton, permberton wedding, the old vineyard, shari and mike photography

I had so many ideas for our rehearsal dinner.  Up until even a month before our wedding, I thought I’d be whipping up some Pinterest-worthy dinner for 30 people.  HA!  When I was knee deep in last minute planning and waaaay over budget, I realized that was a completely ridiculous and basically impossible idea.  So, I did what anyone does when they have no other options.  I googled ‘rehearsal dinner ideas’ and the answer I needed was right there on the screen in front of me.  I read a couple blog posts from wedding planners about how the BEST rehearsal dinners they’d ever planned/attended were the completely casual ones.  They recommended ordering pizza and having drinks, and guess what?  That is EXACTLY what we did!

You guys.  I blinked and suddenly my twenties are…almost over?!  Because, my friends, today I turned 29 years old.  That’s right.  I have only one year left of this youthful decade, and what a strange and exciting journey it has been.

For Those Rainy Days

November 16, 2015

bundled up for fall, how to dress for vancouver fall, what to wear in the rain

Living in the Pacific Northwest leaves you no choice but to get used to the rain.  It’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (looks out the window at this dismal day…), but it really is a part of life here. I’ve grown up in/around Vancouver, so I’m fairly well equipped and unfazed by these weather patterns.  This did change slightly, when I became a young professional.  Back when I was a student, I really didn’t care what I looked like in class.  I was probably far more concerned about writing the paper I’d undoubtedly left until the last minute.  Nowadays, I have meetings/general adultness to look presentable for.  Getting around this city involves taking transit or driving, plus we ALL know that I’ll be stepping out at some point to get a coffee (or two).

Since we’ve established that looking even semi-chic in the rain is quite a challenge, below are a few of my favourite alternatives to the usual rain boots and practical outerwear, plus a tip or two on how to salvage your ootd in the rain!

simple casual wear, blush sweater, fall fashion vancouver, alicia fashionista

I’ve been noticing a huge trend in my posts lately…they all seem to involve denim!  I suppose it’s a sign of plummeting temperatures, but I’m suddenly very aware of this and determined to style up a skirt for my meetings today.  And some actually high heels.  Gosh, it’s so easy to get into a denim and comfortable boots rut!

How To Make The Perfect Wedding Website

November 10, 2015

riley grey wedding website

Much like everything wedding related, I had a very specific vision in mind for our website. I wanted something simple but professional looking that was useful for our guests. This site was going to set the tone for the big day, so let’s just say that my expectations were high. What I wanted actually ended up being impossible to find (don’t worry, this story has a happy ending, read on). In the end, it turns out that our silly little wedding website is one of my favourite things that I created for the big day, so I thought I’d pass on a couple tips. Be sure to check out the final product below, I know you’ll love it!

Making A Point

November 9, 2015

feminine fall, minimal outfit, west coast style, vancouver blogger, aliciafashionista

I had all sorts of big plans and ideas for my week away.  I packed my computer and I even brought our wedding thank you cards to work on.  Then, I got here and remembered that sometimes it’s best to put phones and computers (and cards) away and to actually live in the moment.

Workwear Layers

November 2, 2015

simple fall layers, trench coat, fall outfit, best fashion blog, vancouver style, alicia fashionistaThe formula to a perfect office outfit goes as follows.  You NEED (not want, they’re most definitely a necessity) comfortable, low heels.  It’s key to do light layers, as the warmth of that office heat sure is a shock to the system once you step outside in the cold for lunch!  Next, is a tote bag because a day at the office and/or running around usually requires the kind of bag that can hold all of the things.  And lastly, sport a bold lip colour to really jazz things up and bring the entire ensemble together.  It can also do wonders to distract others from giant bags under your eyes, which can happen from time to time.  Like me, today.

Palm Springs Style

October 30, 2015

stripes and florals, how to pattern mix, travel blogger, alicia fashionista, palm springs outfit

It’s no secret that I’m basically an 80 year old at heart.  An old soul quality that is now being supported by my aching joints and terrible short term memory.  I do also love crossword puzzles, episodes of jeopardy, and orthopaedic shoes.  Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that my love of Palm Springs is no surprise to anyone.  The place caters specifically to the elderly and many of the buildings look like they’re right out of the 50’s!

It was so nice getting to spend a week in Palm Springs, even if it did mean sleeping on a couch for 5 nights (the only way I could arrange free accommodation was crashing at my parent’s rented condo).   A week in such a gorgeous desert seemed like outfit photo heaven, so I packed an entire suitcase almost exclusively with photo worthy looks.  I even got my mom to shoot this one – thanks ma!  To my extreme disappointment, as my camera battery began dying, I realized that I didn’t pack the charger.  Which, was extra frustrating when I’d wasted it on photos of myself and left no battery life to shoot anything at my cousin’s wedding.  Thank goodness for decent iPhone photo quality, or I would have cried.  I still can’t find the camera charger.  I think it’s lost forever!

Travel Diary // Rome, Italy

October 28, 2015

rome, best travel blog, coliseum, must see in rome, how to honeymoon in italy

Roma.  Where do I even start?  The magic of this city hit me the moment I got my first glimpse of the Colosseum.  I had fallen asleep in our cab, as the fourteen hour overnight journey hit me as soon as I sat on that worn leather seat.  My eyes happened to flutter open and glance out the window just as we made a slight left curve around the amphitheatre.  There it was, in all of its glory, right next to a busy street and across the way from a strip of tourist trap restaurants.  It perfectly represented the way remnants of the old world and pieces of modern times exist harmoniously in Rome.
