The holidays can be so hectic and it’s certainly not easy as a couple.  I can’t imagine how people manage when kids are thrown into the mix as well!  This year, we had a feeling that we’d be needing a little rest after the Christmas madness, and so we booked a few nights on Vancouver Island to recharge.  It’ll be a different, quieter NYE than usual but it’s already such a stress relief.  We’re getting to really stop and reflect on the year that was and set some personal goals for the year ahead and I’m so happy for these moments.  More about that tomorrow though, the hot tub is calling my name!

Though I do often enjoying going shopping on Christmas Eve just for fun, this year I had to brave the stores with purpose.  I had a total of zero gifts for Adam, with only hours to rectify this.  Being knocked out for a week before Christmas really is an inconvenience, people!  I hit TopShop first thinking that I could probably find some goodies there, only to be deterred by the biggest distraction of all!  They were having their Boxing Day sales on Christmas Eve – 50% off racks and racks of beautiful pieces.  In fact, the very first thing staring back at me as I rode the escalator down to the store was this leopard sweater that I’d been coveting ever since I saw Sincerely Jules rocking it a few months ago.  Still had one in my size, and let’s just say that things went downhill from there for me.  Grabbed three other items for myself including the above sequin jacket (I’m so very glad that daytime sequins are a thing right now).  Things weren’t all bad though.  I found some really awesome gifts for Adam AND I didn’t feel the need to do any Boxing Day shopping since I’d already found such great deals on the 24th.  Maybe this is a shopping strategy for next year as well?!

Hope you all had the most amazing Christmas and Boxing Day!

In an ironic life twist, Vancouver was hit with a whole bunch of snow on the first day that I was feeling okay enough to get outside.  Apparently no one is getting Christmas gifts this year, because getting knocked out for an entire week just before the 25th isn’t ideal shopping conditions.  Anyway, that night we decided to keep our double date with Vanessa and Tyler because it just involved dinner and then watching the boy’s beer league hockey game in Burnaby.

So, Vanessa and I find the rink that the guys are playing on and there’s just one other person watching at a table, so we park it at the table next to him, but far enough away so that we don’t annoy him with our likely loud and definitely ultra girly convo.  As soon as we sat down though, it was like man oh man, that guy sure looks JUST like Taylor Kitsch.  It’s hard to tell though because you know celebrities, all covered up in toques and sweaters trying to hide and blend in all at the same time.  Plus, my eyesight isn’t all that great.  So then we sat there debating whether it was him or not, as I was feeling super giddy and Friday Night Lights fangirl.  Then a server asked him if he wanted another beer and as soon as I heard that deliciously smooth, deep Riggins-esque voice, I KNEW it was him!

I regret not going up to him, especially since Adam’s brother ran into him at the Vancouver Airport last Christmas and was bragging for days about it.  It’s like running into Taylor Kitsch is now part of our family holiday traditions.  I’ve never really met many celebrities, and I always feel shy about whether or not it’s appropriate to strike up a conversation with them.

Have you ever had any celeb encounters?  What was your experience like?

I love hosting and quite frankly, don’t do it often enough. As a late birthday celebration/early Christmas gathering, I invited a couple gal pals over for some appies, bubbly, and of course, cake!  You just might recognize some of these beautiful faces from their blogs as well.  This mini get together included Cee of Coco and Vera, Jen from Her Waise Choice, Melissa from Miss Melissa, Erin from The Sparkle, Alex from To Vogue or Bust, and Bria from Framework.  You ladies are the bees knees, thanks for helping me celebrate in style XOXO

I used to LOVE sick days.  It meant no school, no “responsibilities” and an excuse to treat my younger brother like a servant and demand necessities like water, and extra blankets.  I remember if I woke up and felt even the faintest signs of a cold, I’d heat myself up as much as possible and demand that my mom took my temperature to see if I happened to actually be sick.  Plus, bonus if it meant you got that banana medicine, remember that glorious creation?

Anyway, being sick as an adult is the complete opposite.  A sick day (or three, in my case) is a total inconvenience that puts you behind in all aspects of life.  I woke up Monday morning with the flu (THE FLU!!!) out of absolutely nowhere!  Hit me like a ton of bricks and I’ve been suffering for three days just trying to fight through the headache and fever.  I know I have a flare for drama, but pretty sure the flu is among the worst.  I couldn’t do anything other than sleep.  I couldn’t even watch Gossip Girl on Netflix.  I couldn’t eat anything, not even ONE cracker.  It was hell.
Today is my first day feeling human again and I plan to spend it wisely.  I’m going to try to have a cup of coffee because Tassimo is calling my name.  I’m going to wash my hair (go me!), and I’m going to get caught up on work and emails.  I still might need to go for a nap in the middle of it, but I have a feeling that today is going to be a really good day 🙂

Holiday Gift Guide: Treat Yo Self

December 13, 2013
TreatYoSelf
The holidays can be
such a stressful time of year, with all the Christmas shopping to do, holiday
parties to attend and/or host, Christmas dinner menus to plan, and extra
seasonal work to do. That’s why I have three words for you today: Treat. Yo.
Self. You work hard all year long, so why not treat yourself to something a
little bit extravagant that you wouldn’t normally buy? Add yourself to the gift
list this holiday season! This December is now officially Treat Yo Self 2013.
Anything your heart desires is fair game. Clothes? Fragrances? Massages?
Mimosas? Fine leather goods? Crystal Beetles? Cashmere-Velvet candy cane
outfits? Full on Batman costumes?* Treat yo self girl, you deserve it.
I’ve compiled a
collection of extravagant non-necessities that I would love to treat myself to
this year. Obviously my Visa had a hernia when it saw the entire list together,
but a girl can dream right? I’m still having trouble deciding what will make
the final cut on my list, so help me out here: What would you love to treat yo
self to this holiday season?
*Two things for those
of you who do not watch Parks and Recreation: a) This list probably sounded
insane to you, and b) you should start watching Parks and Recreation.

Brace yourself, for I have a pretty shocking personal fact to share with you all right now.  I am, quite possibly, the world’s worst athlete.  It was eighth grade that I learned this about myself.  Are you kind of impressed that I was so wildly self aware and at such a young age?  In 1999, I was in every extra curricular activity at school.  I wrote for the newspaper, on the yearbook committee, played volleyball, did gymnastics, got a sweet role in our school musical (Boots in our rendition of Newsies. Also, Christian Bale in the nineties, so dreamy), and even somehow became part of some “advanced” science team.  Which, looking back is all very confusing because in no way did I excel at science.  Anyway, since being on the C team in volleyball (they couldn’t cut anyone in middle school, so they conveniently created an extra team of really bad volleyball players who often weren’t able to attend tournaments) and never doing well in gymnastics thanks to my extreme fear of jumping over the vault and lack of arm strength to actually hold myself up on the bars weren’t enough of an indication that I was no athlete, I decided to join the basketball team that spring.  I attended one practice, where we learned how to pivot, and then my family embarked on a delightful two week long Florida vacation.  Upon my return, the rest of the team had been practicing for weeks, and I arrived just in time for our first game.  I remember sitting on the bench, looking around and thinking, “Oh my God, I don’t know how to play basketball?”   Not really sure how I survived the entire game.  I think I blacked out, like Will Ferrell in Old School, and just got through it, like you sometimes have to do in life.  Quit the team the next morning.

This was all just a long-winded way to tell you that I was always far more successful within the creative arts.  I was a dancer, pianist (you guys, I AM half Chinese), and as I mentioned above, a writer.  I loved the ballet, and music, and that is how we’re going to segue into how I wore this outfit to Ballet BC’s presentation of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.  A ballet choreographed and performed entirely to music by Sarah McLachlan.  The show was just as magical as it sounds.  I still think of their piece to Sarah’s live performance of, Ice Cream, and get goosebumps.  I brought my mom and we had so much fun dressing up and making our way to the Queen E Theatre.  People watching at the ballet is among some of the best, plus we were just a few seats away from Sarah McLachlan herself! If you’re looking for a fun night out, I highly recommend a Ballet BC show.  Their next one is The Nutcracker, and you can buy tickets here.  For now, I must go jeté and pirouette around our living room.

*When I say that ‘ballerinas can’t play basketball’ I really just mean me.  Especially because the dancers
we saw in Fumbling Towards Ecstasy are most definitely amazing athletes!

No socks and a trench coat?!  This look is from only a few weeks ago, but if I went outside wearing this today, I’d absolutely freeze.  Vancouver has been covered with a delightful blanket of snow, which is reason enough for me to be perched up on the couch typing this while wearing a onesie.  Damnit, I do love my Boohoo onesie!!   Like, if it had the built in feet, I’d probably never leave the house again.

Anyway, I really am trying to battle these shorter days by getting out of my home office as much as possible.  Today I get to see my friend Jen and her new little baby girl.  And I’ll have to do some Christmas shopping at some point. I haven’t even started, which is really starting to stress me out!  Have you bought and wrapped your gifts yet?  And if yes, can I hire you to do mine too?

Can you believe this spot is just a few hours away from the city?  I love how we can hop in the car for a bit and be completely transported to another world.  Nicola Lake is so beautiful in the fall, and on private lakefront property, it’s unbelievably silent.  You could hear a pin drop as we stood on the beach and when you breathe in the fresh air, you just can’t help but feel full of gratitude and a sense of calm.  A reminder that amongst the daily chaos, we must take a moment to just breathe and be still.
