May Blossoms + Spring Tides

May 2, 2017

The blossoms mean something different to me this year.  Seasons past, the cherry blossoms in particular were a pretty pink city decoration.  I would admire them while I hurried my way from point a to b, or I’d be out of town during their most impressive, yet short lived display.  For the last month, I have taken the time to absorb and appreciate the blooms more than ever before.  I feel like I’m blooming too.

There seem to be some parallels between this spring’s florals and my business.  They showed up a bit late, thanks to an unusually slow and cold winter.  For many of the same reasons, I too have had a delayed start to the year.  My resolution to ‘come alive’ in 2017 meant propelling forward.  Finally putting all my ideas into motion, and shining bright as an individual in this industry.  What has become abundantly clear lately, is that, as per usual, I’ve been standing in my own way.  I got a bit caught up in what other people were doing and whether I ought to be doing that as well.  The world of blogging and influencers is a strange one.  Maybe I was feeling a bit lost in it and in turn, stuck.  And it’s tough being a one woman show, especially when your brand is, well, you!  I’ve since been finding some clarity, and it finally seems like things are coming together.  As always, it’s a gradual process though, and often two steps forward, one step back.

I have some really exciting partnerships, giveaways and fun projects coming up.  Understandably, I’ve noticed a lot of speculation around sponsored content lately and hey, I get it.  I’m looking at the same posts that you are!  Realistically, it’s the foundation of this industry at the moment.  It will always be a balance to figure out which collaborations are well aligned, paid or not, but I promise you that I give VERY careful consideration and only sign on to what I believe in.  Authenticity and transparency are vital to me personally and professionally.  I hope to continue to tell this story and that you’re still here to listen.

Maybe they were just the inspiration I needed at the moment, these blossoms.  Thank you as always for being here, and I hope that in some way or another, you are in bloom as well!

EDIT: After I wrote this post, I checked my horoscope for today.  Here it is:

“A certain dream of yours has the potential to blossom into something quite wonderful, if you resolve to stay with it for as long as it takes. Your imagination has a lot to do with it, but this has nothing to do with fantasy. There is nothing delusional in your vision. What you desire is founded on practical reality and concrete possibilities. It can and will materialize.”

Alicia, I’ve followed you on IG and read your blog for quite a while now, and I always appreciate your outfits and your words. Your statement, ” I got a bit caught up in what other people were doing and whether I ought to be doing that as well” absolutely resonated with me. It can be a struggle to focus on yourself and what works best for you, not someone else! Thanks so much for sharing. I’m a size 10/12 and it’s hard to find bloggers that are close to my size and that wear outfits I would actually wear, especially ones that transition from work (I’m a healthcare marketing director so finding the balance of professional and creative can be a challenge sometimes) to going out/fun. 🙂

I’m going to be in Vancouver May 20/21ish–any recommendations of places I should go? I’m hoping to have To Vogue or Bust take a few professional lifestyle photos (so over my typical studio headshot) while I’m there as well, as your photos are always flawless!

High five, my fellow 10/12! I completely agree with you about online representation, do you follow any other bloggers/vloggers in our size? I’m always looking for recommendations! SO excited for you to be in Vancouver soon. Definitely have suggestions, what are you looking for? Food? Shopping? Let me know and thanks so much for following along and taking the time to comment, you’re the best, Lauren 🙂 xo

Hi Lauren and Alicia…I’m Jill:) I’m also a size 10 – I call myself a “middle sized woman” and I find it almost impossible to find representation of our size. I’m SO loving the plus sized model movement but it’s still hard to find the “in-between” sizes represented in a real way – so thanks Alicia! I’m a naturopath in Ontario and I run a business called Food Freedom/Body Love, teaching women to normalize their relationship with food and love/respect their bodies….and mixing up their social media feeds to include bodies their size and bigger – represented in a beautiful way – is part of the process…..so any recommendations would be highly appreciated. I send women to this site all the time!!!!!! I love what you and what you represent! Keep it coming!!! XO Jill

Oh these photos are so lovely Alicia. The blossoms were particularly pretty this year…feels like a nice reward after a long winter! That horoscope could not have been more on point. Funny how that happens. Hope you have a great rest of the week 🙂

Thanks for your honesty and inspiring words Alicia! I love reading your blog and as a blogger have the same worries about what others are doing. I love reading your blog and seeing your beautiful pictures! I’m originally from Vancouver so it’s nice to recognize some of my favorite spots in your shots (Granville Island!) 🙂

It’s so true that I know so many bloggers feel the same way about comparison, blog trends, etc. You are doing such a great job with your blog though, and I definitely feel like you have such a unique and fun angle! Thanks so much for your support and taking the time to comment. Hope you’re having a lovely week – Happy Friday 🙂 xo

    Hi:

I love the handbag. Did you have it shipped into Canada? It looks so fragile. I was wondering if they packaged at purse nicely to eliminate and chance of damage.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Kori! I did get it shipped to Canada, BUT I wish I’d picked up in the States because shipping, the Canadian dollar and duty almost doubled the advertised cost of the bag! Still not an outrageous price tag, but definitely way more than I thought I would be spending! They package it very nicely and it arrived in pristine condition! Hope that helps xo
