5 Surprising Things That Make A Bedroom More Relaxing

December 10, 2017

From a cluttered mess to a master retreat.

I had always dreamed of a bedroom that felt more like a sanctuary than a dumping ground for clothing.  But, no matter how much we decluttered, it never felt relaxing, or that to adults could possibly reside there.  Our big bedroom makeover has paid off in so many ways.  We each spend more time enjoying the one and only bedroom in our apartment.  It has been easier to stay organized and feel in control of the clutter.  The improvements have also created an environment that helps us have better sleeps!  A well rested family is certainly a happier family. I’ve highlighted some of the things that have made a difference in our now relaxing space below.  Hope you enjoy!

I’m Wearing: The comfiest black wrap jumpsuit from Cossac.  Seriously, my favourites rn.

An Open Concept Closet

I know, I know, you’re like “but Alicia, having everything out in the open is busier than hiding it behind doors.” Which, yes, I do agree with.  But I’ve been using wardrobes that are NOT open concept for my entire life and have never ever been someone who puts everything back in its place.  My things would end up in piles on the floor, or chairs, or the bed.  Having traditional storage clearly had never worked for me, so I was open to an alternative option like an open concept closet.  And you guys, it has absolutely changed my life (not to sound overly dramatic or anything).  It was a lot of work to purge and keep only what I actually wear, but the pay off is a clothing storage system that miraculously functions as intended.  I put things away because they are seen, but also because they have a spot and it’s right in front of me.  Also, having less and on display makes it visually so much easier to put outfits together!  I cannot recommend it enough if you have similar struggles with closet organization.

Wall To Wall Curtains

We never changed the tan linen drapes that the previous owner left us in the apartment.  In fact, picking curtains seemed like the scariest concept.  Jamie from Amanda Hamilton Design had the idea to raise the curtain rod, swap out a fabric with a design, and have them go wall to wall in order to create the same effect as an accent wall.  This seemed to me like it would be too heavy for our small bedroom, but I was completely wrong.  Having the lightly patterned West Elm curtains going from wall to wall is one of the biggest design impacts in our room.  We also installed new double rods and have a sheer drape behind, which helps us sleep a lot better!  The home beside us has an automatic outdoor spotlight that turns on whenever anything walks by and it happens to shine right into our room.  I didn’t realize how much this was impacting my slumber until we got two layers of curtains to help block it out!

A Sleek Air Purifier

We cannot get enough of our Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link.  So much so, in fact, that it follows us around 24/7.  We use it all day long in the living room and bring it into the bedroom at night.  In typical Dyson fashion, this thing does it all and does it well.  The Pure Hot+Cool Link is a heater or fan, and an air purifier.  Adam, Reggie, and I all are sensitive to air quality (I vacuum and dust as often as possible) and the cleaner air has reduced the amount of sneezing around our apartment.  The heat setting is so powerful, it can heat up our entire living/dining/kitchen area!  Our heating bill this month is shockingly low and we’re warmer than ever!  I’d always wanted a fireplace in each room to get that cozy feeling, but it turns out that the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link is better because it’s portable and cleans the air at the same time.  Classic Dyson, being the most awesome.

A Bit Of Greenery

Such a simple addition to any room, but always so calming.  We never thought we could keep real plants alive in our home, but there are plenty of low maintenance choices that make a big impact in any space.  We’ve been able to keep this little green cutie alive and we adore the way the leaves spill over.  Everyone comments on how great it looks in the room and having a bit of the outdoors inside provides us with that extra bit of serenity.

Symmetry

It always bothered me that our room wasn’t symmetrical.  Oversized furniture kept us from ever having any sort of balance in the room.  There is something about the clean lines that I swear makes a difference in sleep quality.  I can drift off into a slumber feeling balanced and zen.  I think I finally understand the importance of fung shui!

P.S. The feedback on my first bedroom reveal post was truly amazing, thank you guys so much for taking the time to read and leave your comments!  Also, I was blown away by all the local giveaway entries, you are all seriously the best.  I finally got around to choosing a winner last week, you can see more on my Instagram jam.

P.P.S. The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link was gifted to our family, but this is not a sponsored post.  We are as obsessed with it as I said and I think it’d make a great Christmas gift for someone you love!
