My Favourite Summer Travel Things

June 7, 2018

alicia fashionista, vancouver travel blog, summer travel essentials 2018

These are a few of my must-pack items for summer.

This post started out as a May favourites, which is hilarious because it’s now well into June, so clearly, I’m a mess, but WHAT ELSE IS NEW?!

With all the travel I’ve done lately, I thought I’d share a few things that I’d really recommend you bring on your next holiday.  It’s a bit of a random assortment, but I genuinely love each item and think you might too!

A SOOTHING SLEEP MASK | Saje Shut Eye Herbal Eyeshade

Honestly?  The best $12 I’ve ever spent!  I swear that this is the secret to being able to actually sleep on planes now.  This eye mask is super comfortable and the calming herbal scent just instantly makes me feel relaxed.

MY GO-TO CASUAL SNEAKER* | Vionic Joey Sneaker

I first spotted these on Julia Engel in pink, and it was love at first sight.  I ended up getting them in the light grey instead and it’s still such a pretty neutral.  They are Vionic brand so they provide essential arch support, which, if you read in my last post, I desperately need for all the walking done while travelling. I found that they fit true to size and because they are leather, they work well to accommodate my wide foot.  They’re also super lightweight at just 7 oz., making them ideal to pack or wear on a flight.  They are beyond comfortable and the perfect catchall sneaker for travel.

THE BEST TRAVEL YOGA MAT | Explore Travel Mat from Lole

I wanted a travel yoga mat that was light and took up as little space as possible.  After a lot of research, I found the Explore Travel Mat from Lole to be the best option in terms of price and quick arrival.  It’s just 2.2 pounds, non-toxic and PVC free, and most importantly has great grip!  I was able to fold it into my suitcase for Hawaii and do my yoga on the grass at the beach every morning.  It was heaven!

HOW TO STOP LEG CHAFING | Body Glide Anti Chafing Stick

I’m not trying to sound dramatic when I say that discovering the Body Glide Anti Chafing Stick changed my life.  I used to dread summertime!  My thighs rub together and chafe, meaning bare legs and heat were my worst nightmare.  I’ve also been blessed with stretch marks on my inner thighs, so the chafing is extra painful – OUCH!  I tried wearing shorts underneath dresses and skirts, but that feels bulky and is too hot for those really melty days.  I found an anti-chafing stick at a running store and now apply it to my inner thighs.  It provides a protective layer over the skin that smoothly glides against each other.  I re-apply throughout the day, but my legs HAVE to be dry when I apply.  If you’re fresh out of the pool or perspiring, the coating won’t stick and it will not work.  Anyway, this little product has been amazing and it goes everywhere with me.  I keep it in my backpack on day trips and a mini one in my purse for summer evenings.

STAY ORGANIZED | Compression Zipper Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a frequent flyer’s best friend.  I borrowed something similar to these cubes for my Eurotrip and they have revolutionized packing for me.  I was able to squeeze 2 weeks worth of clothes, shoes, and accessories, including both hot and winter cold climates, into just a carry-on.  Packing cubes are magic, and you need them on your next trip!

A VERSATILE BASIC | Lululemon It’s A Tie Tank

I was on the hunt for a workout/summer tank top that would be sort of flattering and also functional.  I ended up with this ‘It’s A Tie Tank’ that I recently featured in my IG stories.  It’s open back and ties at the bottom, but can also be looped through and tie in the front for more stability (perfect during yoga classes).  It’s so light, took up no room in my suitcase, and under $40, so I, of course, had to buy it in black as well.  Being so cool and comfy, I even wore it out to the bar in Thailand a few times with cute shorts and a regular bra.  I’m telling you, it’s my favourite summer tank!

THE PERFECT PLANE READ | When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

You obviously need a good book for any trip.  I just read the beautiful and poignant memoir When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and devoured it in two evenings.  It would be the best plane read, but bring some tissues!  It’ll give you all the feels about life and loss.  Thanks for the recommendation, Jess!

What are some of your fave summer travel things?  Would love to know in the comments below!

*Full transparency, I was gifted the sneakers.  I had my eye on them and reached out to VIONIC because I love them and we’ve collaborated in the past (here and here).  Doesn’t change what I think of the shoes, I just wanted you guys to know that! xo

I like that body glide stuff as well, but it’s so expensive to get in Europe, I tend to stick with Jockey Slipshorts. I cycle a lot so they are handy for tucking in your skirt into at the bottom so you don’t flash everyone! I agree on the packing cubes, they are great.

That’s so strange that it would be so pricey in Europe! That’s good to know too, I just got a pair of cycling shorts, so I’ll see how those fare this summer.

Love this post! And love that comfy outfit you are wearing! Do you mind me asking where you get you jean jacket and leggings? I’m always on the hunt for the perfect ones 😉
