Nothing makes me happier than throwing a few afternoon sequins at people.  It just automatically takes your day to that party level, a place where those who are sequin-less just gaze at you in envy of your daytime sparkle.  This black and gold number was actually a gift from Melissa a few years ago.  Exchanging presents with her is the best, because we basically just get each other exactly what we would have bought ourselves.  In fact, maybe this year we should open our gifts and then just hand them back to each other and keep what we originally purchased!  I think I’m on to something great here, people.  I sense a new Christmas tradition in the making.

Beauty

{beauty} from the runway

My latest beauty collab with Kahlia Adams happened to be right after all the New York, London, and Paris fashion week excitement.  Buzzing with ideas, we set out to recreate a combination of some of our favourite beauty trends, fresh off the runways.

Our first thought was BRAIDS BRAIDS BRAIDS of any kind, as seen at Viktor and Rolf.  Though I don’t know if I could re-create this exact braided style with my impossibly thick and bobby pin rejecting locks, Kahlia did a great job of putting it all back in record time.  She just did two long french braids, parted in the middle, and then twisted them around each other and pinned them into place.

Kahlia used Chanel Khol pencil in 61 and fluidline in blacktrack to create that Michael Kors-eque smokey cat eye.  She then applied Mac lipstick in Rebel with a fluffy brush for more of a stain look, followed by Nars velvet lip pencil in Train Bleu in the center of the mouth and then smudged it outwards for that unevenness.  We complimented the dramatic eyes and lips with some strong brows and  natural skin.

I loved how light and approachable this runway inspired look was.  It was perfect for a night out, and I’ve since been able to re-create it myself.

If you’re loving these beauty collabs, we’d love to hear what you’d like to see next!  Head on over to Kahlia’s Instagram or Facebook Page (or leave a comment below) with any questions or suggestions.  And if you’d like to book Kahlia Adams for an appointment of your own, you can do so here.

I’ve made a very fun discovery.  It turns out, that I have a fashion blogging family!  Cousins on both sides of the family are fashion bloggers and nothing could make me happier.  I think most of you know my cousin Miss Melissa (and if you don’t, then please let me introduce you).  And the best find of all is that my youngest cousin on my dad’s side is Olivia’s Style.  She operates her blog on tumblr, which I’ve yet to fully understand.  Is it like Pinterest?  Why would I need both?  I’m so confused – and this confusion really makes me feel old.  But, I do love her West Coast style and I often look to her for layering and outfit inspiration.
I don’t know about you, but I’m sensing the need for a cousin collaboration soon.  I’ll keep you posted 😉

I don’t mean to sound like a total idiot (well, this post is off to a GREAT start…), but I’m having trouble accessorizing since receiving the ring.  I just never realized how important matching was to me until now.  If it’s not silver, diamonds, or pearls, I can’t bring myself to wear it.  I’ve got a ton of gold accessories that are starting to collect dust!  Hoping this nonsense will pass soon, but in the meantime my wrists, fingers, and neck are going to remain quite bare.

Any tips on how to get over matching my jewellery?  Thanks lovelies xo

The Proposal | September 22nd in Black and White

October 7, 2013

alicia fashionista, how he proposed, alicia quan wedding

September 22nd was just like any other day.  In fact, it was actually less exciting than all of the Sundays we have endured in the last few months.  The first weekend of Vancouver rain, we lazed around and just relaxed – heck, we even napped for an hour!  There wasn’t a single tense moment or hint of nervousness at all.  Which is why, as we were walking out the door to go to my parent’s house for dinner, something felt slightly off.  It started with the look of panic in Adam’s eyes as he stood there in a nice button up and his best shoes, dangling his car keys.  I glanced back at my own reflection to see an old sweatshirt and jeans, with tattered runners.  We WERE just going to my parent’s for a Sunday dinner after all.  But there was something about this moment that hit me like a ton of bricks.  It was potentially happening.

I immediately felt a wave of nausea at the possibility that this was all a setup for something a lot bigger than a family dinner.  I awkwardly declared that I wanted to change into something nicer and Adam agreed in a sincerely relieved kind of way.  I stood in the bedroom staring at my closet, thinking, “What on earth does one wear to their own proposal?”  I settled on a floral skirt and navy blouse, frantically filed my nails, grabbed my camera, and emerged once again from the bedroom, this time ready to face one of the biggest nights of my life thus far.

I adore these first days of fall.  Getting reacquainted with some seasonal favourites and shopping for new staples.  I was finally able to put an end to the impossible faux leather jacket hunt thanks to Mavi.  I also found the perfect off-white oversized blouse and leopard print booties all in the same WINNERS trip.  The woman at the checkout took one look at the leopard and declared that they were CRAZY!  Little does she know, leopard print is most definitely a neutral in my closet.

Photos by the mighty talented Aaron Schwartz.
Oh, you know.  Just a super fun collab with Kiara of Tobruck Ave. and Alex of To Vogue Or Bust.  How’s that for a Monday morning?!  I had the pleasure of meeting up with Kiara for coffee while she was visiting from LA (she’s such a sweetie, I cannot say enough great things about her). And as most great ideas happen, it was over lattes that we came up with the idea of a collaboration with Alex.  Our guidelines were only ‘fall denim’, so it was extra exciting showing up to Stanley Park to see how we each styled our individual looks.  They’re all so perfectly us 🙂
Thanks again to Aaron for the awesome photog skills, and to Kiara and Alex for the lovely evening.  Long live the Canadian tuxedo!  Be sure to check out more denim details on their blogs here and here.

Well, I’m taking my sparkle (ring and all – woot) over to the dentist today.  There’s really no better place to sport your best than a place where you wear a bib and someone else has to floss your teeth. I hope you’re not sick of seeing these berry coloured booties, because they’re all I can seem to wear lately.  Like a moth to a flame, my feet just gravitate towards them while I’m getting ready in the a.m.  Let’s just hope this remains a healthy relationship and I don’t end up as ‘the girl in berry boots”.  It could become a real fear of mine.  Enjoy your day, my fellow fashionistas xo
